It is important for the world never to forget

Imagewhat happened in Guatemala during the civil war, which lasted 36 years. More than 200.000 people were killed or disappeared without a trace. The Mayan population bore the largest burden of these atrocious events, yet very few ever speak of it in Guatemala or elsewhere. It is rarely ‚ if ever - part of educational materials.

Two important Truth Commissions by the United Nations and The Catholic Church have documented the civil war crimes, but the voices of the victims are never heard. Danish radio journalist Lotte Holmen decided to change this by making her own personal truth commission on local radio in Guatemala and on the website, youíre now visiting.

ImageTraveling across Guatemala in 1999-2000 Lotte Holmen recorded a large number of Mayans telling their touching stories ‚ often for the first time. Their voices are now heard in Spanish and translated into various local languages on local radio stations in Guatemala. Since the Para Nunca Olvidar website went online in 2000 thousands have listened to a short version of the testimonials online.

Through the support of DANIDA , the Danish development agency, the detailed documentation is now made available online as an interactive resource to the world educational community. The recordings of the 16 long key testimonials may be acquired at cost ‚ otherwise the service is completely free.

ImageIt is our hope that educators of the world will use the testimonials and the illustrations to the benefit of the students ‚ and that youíll share your knowledge, ideas and experiences with colleagues everywhere through this website. We know that by working with live materials like these the students get an educational experience beyond Spanish language training.
