"In Denmark we find it very important that human rights abuses committed
during the civil war are not forgotten. This has been an important element
in the Danish aid program, initated by the end of the Guatemalan civil
war in 1996."
"The main goal for the Danish aid program
has been to support the development of a democratic society where human
rights are respected. Among other things Denmark has supported the Truth
Commission's extensive mapping of human rights abuses committed during
the civil war."
"We have also supported the work of the Catholic Church's human rights
office assisting Mayan villages opening mass graves. Through this work
the church has facilitated that surviving family members had an opportunity
to conduct funeral services, as well as contributing with trauma treatment
of those left behind."
"The subject's continued sensitivity in Guatemala was shown by the murder
of Bishop Geradi immediately after the Catholic church had published an
extremely critical report on for example the army's role in the civil
war." "Denmark will therefore support all initiatives, which can positively
contribute to the healing and conciliation process in Guatemala."
