of the comments of the executive secretary of
The UN Truth Commission of Guatemala, Fernando Castañón
"I would like
to thank you for taking this initiative and for this very useful project
it ís very important, in fact it ís essential that people can talk about
their past we all need not only to be able to maintain our past, but also
express ourselves about it and analize it.
A lot of people, victims of the tremendous violence that Guatemala experienced,
have lived years, and talking about years, even decades, without being
able to talk about these these horrible experiences ñ therefore the fact
of giving to these people the possibility of telling about what happened
is actually a contribution to this line of recommendations that the Truth
commission gave in order to make people maintain their memory of the past
ñ
Because of the lack of an objective treatment
of the past, I think that itís essential that this kind of work is actually
spread out so that we will all get to know the magnitude of the violence
as I said the Commission could only analize a few of the cases of violation
of the human rights and cases of violence, only a few, not all of the
cases came to the knowledge of the Commission because a lot of people
were actually not able to come to us ñ
That is why itís so important that we get to know of all the cases the
Commission came to the conclusion that 200.000 people were killed during
the war in Guatemala, that means that this number of people were executed
or desappeared, which also means killed ñ and that ís why itís so important
to keep spreading the knowledge of what happened."
