An
anonymous victim:
"I'm afraid of telling this to others - I'm afraid. I can't say that I
trust you, I don't trust you. What this most of all has left in us, is
this fear. That is what it has left. A thorn in the heart - a thorn that
we can't get rid of. Because you can't forget it, that's impossible.
So it's in my brain, it's in my soul. I
would like to cry out to everybody, to tell them that, yes, that they
are guilty, tell them that the majority of the massacres and the abductions
were done by the army. But there is no opportunity, there isn't. We can't.
It makes me feel good to tell it to our children, so that they can tell
it to their children, so that from generation to generation they won't
forget it. And
I don't want to forget it, and what is left
is the fear, the dread. And I would also like to tell to those who would
listen, to those who hear this testimony that I have now succeeded in
giving you, that Guatemala has suffered a lot, has suffered a lot under
the governments of Benedicto Lucas Garcia, of Romeo Lucas, of Rios Montt.
They were the greatest murderers, I would say. They liked to shed blood;
they liked to see blood run in the streets, or to kill people and just
leave them lying there as animals so that the vultures could eat them,
and there wouldn't be any evidence - people with whom we lived. We saw
with our own eyes what happened ... We can't forget it.
It makes me very happy to tell you what I feel, what we saw with our own
eyes. I wish the project "Never to Forget" good luck. To me it's a beautiful
project, because you can make it known, you can get all that you feel
out - because we have a thorn in our souls, in our hearts. We want to
cry out to everybody what happened, who was responsible, and why people
don't believe us. The project will explain what I feel - everything that
we feel inside - and we can never forget it, because it's a thorn that
nobody can tear out of our hearts. And I congratulate you on your project."
